If you're considering art school, it's important for you to know that The Art Institute is a chain of lecherous, money-sucking corporate schools that charge you a CalArts price for a community college quality education. As a result of this, my school chums and I are entering the workforce tens of thousands of dollars in the hole.
Freelance is a great way to barely make it. It will cover a cheap apartment and a bag of rice every month, and you might be able to make every other student loan payment. At least, that's been my experience.
More than half of the people I know have taken financial refuge at a studio called Legend. It pays great money and provides plenty of overtime for recent graduates who need extra money to pay off their loans. On the other hand, most of their employees are working twelve hour days, six or seven days a week. On the rare occasion that I see any of them, I am told that I am one of the lucky ones. I have no money, but I have the ability to live freely, to spend my afternoons working at a leisurely pace in a coffee shop on some city corner, to watch the sun rise in the mornings without having to rush through my routine while simultaneously brushing my teeth and eating a bagel - I know so many of my desk-jobbing friends do just that every day.
So here's to freelance - be poor and enjoy life!
